A Recap of the European Disc Golf Championships 2023

The much-anticipated 2023 disc golf competition in Estonia has etched itself into the annals of sports history and won a place in the hearts of many. The European Championships, from August 16th to August 20th, unfolded at the historic and esteemed Tallinn Song Festival Grounds. The top disc golf players from Europe competed across four divisions (MPO, FPO, MJ18, and FJ18).

Over four days, the competition delivered high-caliber disc golf, leaving lasting impressions on players and spectators. Thrilling battles for top positions played out in all divisions. One standout moment from the competition was Egert Hütt's exceptional performance in the MJ18 division on the opening day. At 15 years old, he recorded the highest PDGA rating ever (1087) in Estonian disc golf history. His initial round, finishing at -13, remained the course record for the European Championships in 2023.

Another noteworthy achievement was made by Kristin Tattar, who delivered her best round to date during the second competition round. With a PDGA rating of 1054 (compared to the previous record of 1033), this result ranks as the fifth-best round in women's disc golf history.

The race for top spots in the MJ18 and FJ18 divisions was intense. By the conclusion of the fourth day, the victors had emerged, especially in the FJ18 division, where the Finnish champion Iida Lehtomäki had an impressive 11-shot lead over the second-place finisher! Meanwhile, Finland celebrated a triple triumph in the MJ18 division, with Onni Ruusunen crowned the European Champion in 2023.

The FPO and MPO divisions saw our new European Champions, Kristin Tattar (FPO) and Dennis Augustsson (MPO), swiftly establishing and maintaining their lead throughout the four-day competition.

The MPO and FPO divisions undoubtedly stirred the most unforgettable sentiments, particularly with Deniss Augustsson's (MPO) display of high-level disc golf, showcasing technical prowess and a robust mental game. His remarkable lead of 10 throws over the second-place finisher in the final score further underscored this.

Similarly, Kristin Tattar approached the last day of the competition with a commanding lead, securing a significant 16-throw advantage over the runner-up. At that juncture, no athlete or spectator harbored doubts about her resounding success. Nevertheless, as we all know, nothing is certain in disc golf until the final disc settles in the basket of the last round. We bore witness to Kristin Tattar's emotionally charged and challenging final round. Despite the setbacks in the closing moments, Kristin Tattar clinched the title of European Champion 2023, solidifying arguably one of the most emotionally charged victories in the history of disc golf.
