It’s Official: The Disc Golf World Championships Are Coming to Estonia

Team Discgolf Estonia has signed a groundbreaking four-year agreement with the Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA), bringing multiple major tournaments—and the 2029 World Championships—to Estonia.

Following the success of the 2023 European Championships and the 2024 Disc Golf Pro Tour Elite event, Team Discgolf Estonia continues its momentum. The newly signed deal secures not only this year’s first-ever Major in Estonia but also two additional Majors in the coming years, and culminates in hosting the PDGA World Championships in 2029.

According to Team Discgolf Estonia co-leader Matthias Vutt, the agreement is the result of nearly six months of negotiations with the PDGA. “We initially applied to host the Worlds in 2026 or 2027. Once we learned the PDGA had already committed to U.S.-based events in those years, we pivoted—and ultimately landed on a bigger, more strategic long-term plan,” Vutt explained.

Although this historic agreement was made outside of the usual bid cycles, both parties saw the value in long-term collaboration. “PDGA recognized Estonia’s proven ability to host world-class events, the support we’ve received nationally and locally, and our passion to keep pushing the sport forward. On our end, we saw a unique opportunity to contribute fresh ideas and help grow the game—both in Europe and globally,” said Vutt.

PDGA Executive Director Doug Bjerkaas noted that Estonia’s proposal to host the Worlds stood out so strongly that the PDGA sought a non-traditional solution. “While the 2025 Worlds are already set to take place in Europe, the majority of the pro disc golf scene is still U.S.-based. So we reached a compromise: bring the next European Worlds forward to 2029, and award Estonia the rights to host two more Majors in 2026 and 2028.”

Bjerkaas also highlighted Estonia’s long-term event planning as a key factor in the decision: “Most tournament bids don’t come with a five-year roadmap and detailed guarantees. Team Discgolf Estonia’s forward-looking strategy gave us the confidence that the 2029 Worlds will be delivered at the highest possible level.”

The deal also brings stability to the organizing team. “It gives us peace of mind,” said Vutt. “We no longer have to guess from year to year what’s coming. We can plan ahead and offer our partners and supporters a reliable long-term vision.”

While budgets and dates for the 2028 and 2029 events are still being finalized, Vutt gave a hint of what’s ahead: “This year’s Major has a budget of €600,000. With future events taking place on two courses and lasting more days, we’re expecting additional costs of €500,000 to €600,000. The Worlds in 2029 will likely require a budget in the €1.1 to €1.2 million range.”

The first event of this new chapter—the 2025 European Disc Golf Festival, a PDGA Major—takes place July 17–20 at the iconic Tallinn Song Festival Grounds. The week kicks off with a special showcase event on July 15: “Coolbet presents: Disc Golf Superstar Showdown x Trad.Attack!”, featuring one of the final live performances by beloved Estonian band Trad.Attack! before their creative break this fall. Tickets are available at Piletikeskus.
